My Healthy Hair Care Routine
Where my mermaid hair girls at? Your hair is my inspiration and my major hair goals. Give me all the long or short, beachy, healthy perfect hair. The lengths to which I will go to for healthy hair are always amazing to me (and my husband!) Lol. I’ve tried many methods for achieving healthy hair and I’m here to spill all the tea. There may have been some foreshadowing there… hint hint.
WHAT MAKES HAIR HEALTHY?
Healthy hair may be evident in its appearance by looking shiny and sleek with minimal breakage, but the way that it feels and acts under pressure are really great indicators for healthy hair. I think that healthy hair grows at a decent pace, feels smooth to the touch, and can withstand a hair color treatment or treatment with a hot tool on occasion (mostly because it doesn’t endure those things too frequently). I want my hair to look and feel like I’m taking care of it. When it comes down to it, I think that keeping your hair healthy has a lot to do with keeping your body healthy and then after that a few basic tips and tricks will add to that effect that you’ve triggered from the inside.
MY HEALTHY HAIR ROUTINE
START ON THE INSIDE
I’m a big believer in that what you put on the inside will show up on the outside. If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I’m a big believer in getting my fill of water in each day. They say that a good rule of thumb is to drink half of your body weight in ounces each day. This isn’t junk science, I can absolutely tell when I haven’t been getting enough water and it shows in my hair and skin. I promise, ladies! So my recommendation is to start with getting enough water into your body each day and then begin making sure that you are consuming foods that are nourishing your body rather than depleting it. Fruits and veggies are where it’s at, my friends. I love to supplement anything that is missing from my diet by treating my body to high quality supplements. WASH THREE TIMES WEEKLY, MAX!
This used to be so taboo but I feel like we all know now that washing your hair too frequently is no bueno. Seriously, if you’re doing this still you’ve got to get on the dirty hair bandwagon ASAP. Let your natural hair oils work their magic on your hair throughout the week by washing every 2-3 days.
MINIMIZE HEAT EXPOSURE
This may be another no-brainer, but I really try not to use hot tools (blow dryers, straightening irons, or curling irons) on my hair as minimally as possible. Whenever I can let me hair air dry, I do and I only curl my hair when it is freshly cleaned and then I let the curls work themselves out into beachy waves for the remaining days until my next shower.
TRIM IT.
I can’t tell you how important it is to trim off those dead ends on a regular basis. They aren’t helping you and they definitely aren’t helping your hair grow faster. We’ve all been guilty of being too nervous to take any off the bottom, especially if we’re trying to grow out our locks, but the process of cutting out the old to make room for the new does not just apply to life folks. Healthy hair looks happiest when trimmed by a great stylist.
DO A TREATMENT ONCE IN A WHILE.
Treat yo’ self, ladies. I try to do a deep conditioning treatment on my hair at least once weekly so make sure it stays healthy and shiny. There are so many wonderful products, and I’ll recommend some down below, but coconut oil is an amazing go-to that most of us have in our homes already.
ESSENTIAL HEALTHY HAIR PRODUCTS
Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides. I love to mix these collagen peptides into my daily green smoothie or into a nourishing evening tea. I see a major difference in my skin and hair when I’m taking this supplement consistently.
Arctic Tumblers. My key to getting my water in every day. Keeps my water ice cold even in the summer heat! Add some flavored collagen peptides for double the healthy hair boost.
SexyHair Healthy Sexy Hair Tri-Wheat Leave in Conditioner. I have been using this for years and it still makes my favorites list! I spray it on after I get out of the shower and I use a wet brush to brush it out from ends to roots in small sections. Leaves my hair feeling silky, tangle-free, and nourished.
DEEP CONDITIONER. This deep conditioner is an intense hydrating mask and works SO good.
SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER. I’ve been using this shampoo & conditioner for a few months and love it! It makes your hair feel clean and silky smooth + doesn’t leave build up. It also smells amazing!
FAVORITE HOT TOOLS. I love this curling iron! I have it in two sizes depending on what look I am going for. Also, I use the 1 1/4″ the most.
DRY SHAMPOO. There are two dry shampoos I love. My favorite is this one. It is amazing and a little goes a long way. My favorite drug store dry shampoo is this one!
