Date Night Makeup Tutorial

Whether staying in or going out, there is something that I love so much about getting glammed up for a night with my hubby.  If I can get an extra thirty minutes to sit at my vanity and play with makeup, it really is so relaxing and therapeutic for me!  I like to experiment with different looks and shades and let my creativity come through, especially as seasons change.

This summer, and most summers for that matter, I really love to keep things glowy, fresh, and warm.  I gravitate more towards warm, orangey shadows and lip colors that aren’t too cool or bold.  The more bronzed, the better!

Date Night Makeup Tutorial

Here’s how I achieve one of my favorite date-night makeup looks:

Step One: Prep and Prime

In the summer, I take special care to make sure my makeup can hold up to temps upwards of 90 degrees.  I love this primer because I swear it helps my makeup hold better and for longer periods of time.  I take a small amount on the tips of my clean fingers and pat onto my face, concentrating the majority of the product on my t-zone where things can potentially get more oily throughout the night. (use code DTHOMPSY for a discount!)

PRO-TIP: Let your primer set for a minute or two before applying foundation for the most staying power.

Step Two: Use A Long-Wearing Foundation

There are so many amazing foundations out there now and I love so many but for a glam summer date night look, I love using my tried and true Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation.  This stuff STAYS, you guys!  And it looks so flawless.

I love to apply it by using a dense flat-top brush and buffing it into my skin in circles.  After I’ve covered my face, I go in with a damp beauty sponge to make sure that everything is even and there are no lines.

I then go in with a brightening concealer under my eyes and anywhere I can tend to get dark and blend that in with the flat side of that same damp beauty sponge.

PRO-TIP: Use a very, very light layer of foundation and apply a double layer only in areas where you need more coverage.

Step Three: Use a powder with a natural or glowy sheen.

Yes, we definitely want to set our makeup but it doesn’t have to be super matte! In fact, I prefer that it isn’t in summer.  Charlotte Tilbury really nails it when it comes to powders that don’t look powder-y and I also love this one.

Step Four: Wispy, Fluffy Brows

I’m really into a fluffy, natural brow at the moment and it’s actually super simple to achieve.  All I do is use this brow product to fill in any sparse areas and give my brows some definition.  I then take this brow gel and use the wand to brush them in an upwards motion so that they give a fluffy, natural look.

PRO-TIP: Don’t have a brow gel? In a pinch, you can spray hairspray on a spoolie brush and use that to set your brows in place for the evening.

Step Five: Warm, Sunset Eyeshadow

This is one of my favorite parts!  This summer I’ve loved using this palette to create a glowing, sunset eye look.  I truly think that warm tone shadows look good on every eye color, and especially those with blue eyes.  The blue contrasts the warm tones so beautifully.

First I take a light to midtone warm brown shadow on a fluffy brush and lightly buff that into the crease of my eye.  I like to let it flare out just a bit at the outer corners to create a “lifted” look or a more almond shape.

Next, I take a smaller shadow brush and an orange shadow just in the outer “v” of my eye crease to create more definition and color.

Depending on where we’ll be headed, I may add a shimmery gold shadow (I love Kitten by Smashbox) on the inner corners and lid of my eye and I usually just do that using the tip of my finger so that I can be precise and pat it on rather than brush it on and create a shimmery mess on my cheeks.

Curl your lashes and add a coat or two of mascara to make those eyes POP!

PRO-TIP: For more of a smokey eye, you can use a red-tone brown on the lid instead of a gold.

Step Six: Bronze and Pop

What is a summer makeup look without a bronzed glow?  I like to take a big kabuki brush and buff my fave, The Charlotte Tilbury Bronzer, in an “E” motion on the sides of my face.  To be clear, the top of the e is your hairline, the middle is your cheekbone, and the bottom is your jawline.  Work in light layers to avoid “muddy” bronzer lines.

Then I take a blush brush and lightly tap into this coral, glowy blush.  I love the way this shade complements the warm tones in the eyeshadows I used.  I like to place it on the apples of my cheek. And then blend upward on my cheek bone lightly. (I love the shade “warm soul”)

If highlighter is your jam, go ahead and tap a little highlighter on the tops of those cheekbones and the high points of your face.

PRO-TIP:  This should be its own step because it’s SO key.  The Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray is like hairspray for your face.  It doesn’t create a matte look, it just keeps your makeup in place all night long.

Step Seven: Kissable, Soft Lips

Last but certainly not least, I line my lips with this Charlotte Tilbury liner and blend out using the clean tip of my finger.  Then I’ll go in with this perfect lipstick in a very light layer and dab it out with my finger as well.  We’re not going for perfect, we’re going for natural and hydrated!  If you love a good gloss like I do, pop a light layer on top using this gloss (it’s to DIE for)!

Liner “Pillow Talk” // Lipstick “Rum Punch” // Gloss “Sugar Sugar”
