3 Ways To Rock a White Dress This Summer

Would you believe me if I told you that my closet is made up primarily of dresses? Being pregnant AND it being summertime has only made my dress obsession worse and I am not even mad about it.  I feel like Kristen Wiig in Bridesmaids when I talk about dresses… they’re flowy, they breathe, they have pockets, haha!  I won’t bore you any more with how much I love to wear dresses but if you aren’t wearing one at least once a week, well I think you’re missing out on true comfort.

Nothing says summer quite like a white dress.  In the United States, there is an unspoken “rule” (which I do not follow) that you only wear white between Memorial Day (in May) and Labor Day (in September).  So, according to this unspoken rule, you gotta wear your white dresses in summer!  Really, you don’t, but it’s a good excuse to try a few new ways to rock an all white look as much as possible.

Let’s talk about the key piece in all of these looks before we dive into how to rock it: the white dress.

There are about a million different white dresses on the market and so you may be wondering… how do I choose the right one for me?  First, I would say to consider your personal style.  Are you minimalistic and simple in your style?  A white, mid-thigh length short sleeve shift dress would be a perfect option.  If your style is feminine and sweet, maybe you opt for a short baby doll style dress.  If you’re a self-proclaimed boss babe, maybe you’d prefer a knee length dress with a pencil skirt silhouette and high neckline.

The second thing to consider is versatility.  No matter what, keeping your white dress simple with under 1-2 unique details will help keep the piece versatile so that you can wear it over and over and over again. For example, if your white dress has balloon sleeves and a keyhole back, that’s preferable over one that has balloon sleeves, a keyhole back, a belted waist, and tulle cuff details. Versatility is key to creating as many outfits as possible.

Date Night

Sid and I love to go on an early date night a few times a month and one of my favorite parts about it is being able to get dolled up!  For your next summer date night, pair your white dress with statement earrings, a sleek hairstyle, and trendy white strappy heels.  The statement earrings will draw attention to your gorgeous face (I see you, girl!).  Because we want the statement earrings to not get lost in the look, I love a sleek hairstyle.

Depending on your hair, this could mean a slicked back ponytail, bun, or straight and down.  I love this look because the earrings don’t get lost in hair.  Lastly, an open toe (heel or no heel) sandal makes the perfect pairing. Ones with square toes are super on trend right now but so are white shoes in general so don’t be afraid to try out a white shoe, they will really make your summer glow pop!

Out and About

Summer time means the AC is cranked all the way down so you bake when you’re outside and freeze when you’re inside. For that reason I like to have a few light cardigans that I can throw in my bag or around my shoulders when the indoors get a little chilly.  Try pairing your white dress with a light, neutral cardigan and layered gold necklaces.  I love to layer dainty jewelry to create a “stacked” effect, especially with minimal outfits.  Lastly, throw on a cognac or neutral leather pair of sandals and you’re good to go to the office, store, lunch with a friend, or wherever your day takes you.

Hanging Out With The Kids

More often than not, I’m chasing littles around on summer days and I actually love dresses for that reason because (as long as they’re long and loose enough), I’m able to stay super cool and comfortable.  The 90s are still so hot right now so try throwing your hair in a low pony or bun with a fun scrunchy for a little added 1990’s detail. Not only are white sneakers SO on trend right now, but they’re also so functional for mom-duty days.  Depending on the style of your dress and your personal style, you could try a simple slip on, a platform kick, or an athleisure pair.  Add a brown-nude lip and you’re a whole mood.
